The founder of the Byredo brand talks to us about his new perfume, Mumbai Noise, and confides in his little pleasures.

India

“This country has a very strong personal value for me. My mother, who has always inspired and supported me, is Indian. When I was little, we often went to visit my grandmother and my family in Chembur, in the suburbs of Bombay. During these trips, I discovered beautiful places, such as Udaipur and Jaipur, in Rajasthan. When my grandmother passed away, I didn’t go to India for several years. The day I went back, everything seemed different, but familiar at the same time. This country also influences me for my work, and it is quite naturally that I created Mumbai Noise. Rather than a photograph frozen in the past, I see this perfume as an endless story, in perpetual evolution. »

Swedish nature

“I live in Stockholm, but I’m lucky to have a house in Gotland. This island in the Baltic Sea is particularly known for the city of Visby, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. My house has a panoramic view of a breathtaking landscape. There, the sheep roam freely everywhere. When I’m there, I feel in communion with everything around me, fully present and disconnected from the rest of the world. In addition, there is very little network! »

Spend time with loved ones

“It may seem obvious, but it is very important for me to spending time with my family and friends. Considering the two years that we have all just experienced, I was very lucky to be able to benefit from their presence. This period was also an opportunity to spend more time with my studio teams, and I was able to immerse myself even more in Byredo, my brand. »

Create without limits

“The birth of Byredo, in 2006, is the result of a ‘beautiful accident’. I was a professional basketball player, until the day when, following administrative problems, I had to stop my career. I was in my twenties, the pill was hard to swallow. When I founded Byredo, I decided not to put up any barriers: if an idea cannot be expressed in the form of scent, it may come to life in another way. Each idea gives rise to another, and I think it’s great that we can’t be put into a single category. Even if it is above all a mark of beauty, we are totally free. »

His news

“Mumbai Noise is an enveloping fragrance full of contrasts. It pays homage to the district of Chembur, in Bombay. »

His destination

“Asia, whether it’s Japan, Korea or China. I miss traveling to all these countries. »

His documentary

“The Last Dance”, a documentary series that traces Michael Jordan’s journey with the Chicago Bulls. This man is so much more than a sportsman. »

His music

“The Notorious BIG since the 1990s, his music influences me enormously. »
