What is watsu massage?
The watsu massage has the particularity of taking place in water at 35°C. The person abandons himself in the arms of the practitioner who will tune his movements to the breath. He then alternates rocking gestures, stretching and pressure on the meridians, allowing the energy to circulate. Unlike a classic massage where you have to follow a precise protocol, the watsu offers greater freedom to the professional. The latter can adapt its movements according to the ability to let go, expectations or emotional state.
Water, a beneficial element
Rocking in the water allows you to disconnect from the external environment and guarantee a real let go. Heated, the water loosens the muscles and above all relieves the body of the weight of gravity. If this massage is considered therapeutic in Switzerland where it is reimbursed, this is not yet the case in France. Nevertheless, watsu has real well-being virtues: it deeply releases tension and soothes the ailments of body and mind. Water allows greater fluidity in movements and offers possibilities of gestures impossible to reproduce on dry land. Enough to make your mind believe that you are levitating!
Who is watsu massage for?
Expectant mothers are very demanding of this practice to be able to relieve themselves of the weight of their baby. Stressed people will also feel concerned as much as those who feel the simple need to relax. Yogis are also great adepts. But that’s not all ! Water-phobic people can find a certain solution there, especially since it is not compulsory to know how to swim. The important thing is to be properly supervised by a certified professional.
Should we be careful with watsu massage?
“The contraindications are more related to the water itself than to the practice of watsu”, specifies Philippe Quillien. People with open wounds or prone to ear infections cannot try the experience. The same goes for people with ruptured eardrums or with serious heart or respiratory problems. Apart from that, we strongly advise you to take the plunge!
