On August 23, Meghan Markle unveiled its podcast called “Archetypes” available exclusively on Spotify. A project that aims to fight against gender stereotypes, and in particular those of which women are victims. For each episode, the Duchess of Sussex is accompanied by a personality. After Serena Williams, wife of prince harry has received Mariah Carey. Together, the two young women discussed around a theme that sticks to their skin: the notion of diva. An intimate, deep and funny exchange where the two stars also spoke of their difficulties encountered due to their textured hair.
“They didn’t know how to do my hair”
As a teenager, Meghan Markle did not feel represented enough in the media world. Until Mariah Carey arrived. In “Archetypes,” Archie’s mother opens up about the lack of representation of black and mixed-race women during her childhood. The former actress then underlines the importance of women such as Mariah Carey who have never hesitated to speak of their origins with pride. She also brings up the intact memory of the first time she watched the “Dreamlover” music video. “I remember your curly hair perfectly,” she says. A point to which Mariah Carey decided to come back: “Here’s the problem: they didn’t know how to do my hair, because if it was a white hairdresser who had never had to deal with textured hair, he would have tended to do something different. And my hair would have said ‘No, no you’re not going to do that!’”. An anecdote that echoes the experience of Meghan Markle who says she had “so many greasy products in her hair” when certain professionals were trying to “smooth” her roots. “In my family, nobody knew how to do my hair when I was a little girl,” the singer then added. For the Duchess of Sussex, same story. The 41-year-old fondly recounted the time her maternal grandmother, Jeannette, tried to braid her hair. “She said ‘hold on to the sink’ and I grabbed my little hands on both sides. There was no tender gesture, because she took the brush, brushed, brushed and tied”. If the conversation then returned to the main subject of this episode, Meghan Markle confided “that they could have talked about their hair for a very long time”.
