What made them successful now causes their unpopularity. The sulfates contained in shampoos “make it possible to rid the hair of care and styling products as well as to eliminate residues of pollution or dust”, explains Neila Dahlander, training manager at Maria Nila. But these surfactants with cleansing and foaming powers act “a little more than necessary”, continues the expert. A characteristic that has earned them a presence in certain household products. Something to ask questions… And for good reason, if they can easily eliminate silicone-based styling products, “these shampoos used too regularly, even excessively, can dry out and irritate the scalp”. In some cases, they even pose a risk of allergy. The solution ? Embrace the trend low poo and above all turn to the sulfate free shampoos.
Why turn to a sulfate-free shampoo?
Sulfate-free shampoos have the advantage of being suitable for all hair types. Yes, unlike the product with sulphate, they do not alter the pigment and are therefore suitable for colored hair. In addition, “they can be used regularly without the hair being weakened and the natural pH of the scalp disturbed”.
How to choose and use your sulfate-free shampoo?
While many shampoos today are labeled “sulfate-free”, you can go further by checking the ingredients on the product label: “if it mentions ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) then, there is presence of sulfates”. Softer but still part of the list of sulfates, there is also Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS).
On the other hand, there are other cleaning agents, which are not sulphates, but which offer real alternatives like “Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate”, according to the expert. Not to be confused, then!
Once the sulphate-free shampoo has been chosen, it’s time to use it. For this, the expert advises to apply it on wet hair and to rinse it well. A process to be repeated a second time if the hair has received styling products in order to thoroughly clean the hair and rid it of any residue. To complete the routine, she recommends the use of a conditioner.
