A true anti-aging nugget, the retinol – more commonly known as vitamin A – is used in a large number of cosmetics. Indeed, this ultra-powerful active ingredient helps to fight against wrinklesfirm the skin, regain radiance, erase pigment spots and fight against imperfections. Only problem ? Retinol should be used with caution as its action can cause irritation and redness. To counter its undesirable effects, beauty addicts have found a solution: retinol sandwiching. With more than 9 billion views on the networks, this technique which consists of applying a moisturizer below and above the retinol treatment is not unanimous among dermatologists.

The retinol sandwich: good or bad idea?
Imagined to counter the undesirable effects of retinol, retinol sandwiching would not actually be effective. “Moisturizers contain occlusives that create a physical barrier on the skin to retain water in the epidermis. You may then be absorbing very little of your retinol skincare, and while minimizing irritation, you may also be minimizing the effectiveness of the skincare,” Dr. Gmyrek told US site Shape. His recommendation? Use retinol care with moisturizing active ingredients to minimize irritation and the risk of allergy.
