Lifting, abdominoplasty, breast reduction… Are post-operative scars inevitable?

To the question “Will I have a scar?” “, The answer is yes. But what will considerably modify their size and improve their discretion and absorption is the hand of the practitioner and the discipline of the patient. Oliver Claude and Nathaniel Stroumza, plastic surgeons, give us their tips and tricks to reduce scarring as much as possible.

no tobacco

Stop smoking, which alters the quality of the skin: “one month before and one month after the operation, at least”, agree to say the two specialists. It is enemy number 1 of interventions. “Also watch out for nutritional deficiencies, especially vitamin or protein deficiencies,” says Dr. Olivier Claude. You can prescribe marine collagen to fill some gaps. »

No sun

We avoid the sun during the first six months following the intervention, and we protect the lesion with a high SPF, that is to say SPF 50, if the scar is exposed to the outside, at the risk of having permanent stains!

No antiseptic

“No Betadine or Biseptine, because studies have shown that antiseptics can degrade the positive bacterial flora of the skin and lead to delayed healing,” notes Nathaniel Stroumza.

A nickel stitch

“For a perfect suture and to avoid any inflammation, I use specific suture threads that are very quickly resorbable”, testifies Dr Stroumza. “To avoid creating tension on the tissues, I make deep so-called padding sutures over the entire detachment. This operating time improves the follow-up and the final result”, adds Dr. Claude.

The association of techniques

To reduce the length of the scar as much as possible and tone the skin on the treated area, skin tightening techniques are combined with the surgical operation to firm the skin. This can happen during the operation thanks to specific cannulas, or after the operation with about ten radiofrequency or ultrasound sessions. The choice will be made by discussing with your doctor and according to the targeted area.

Skin removal

“To obtain perfectly healthy healing, I remove a thin layer of skin that has been in contact with the surgeon’s instruments and heated by coagulation,” adds Dr. Stroumza.

Post-operative lasers

“The UrgoTouch Laser, which is applied at the end of the operation, provides tissue repair growth factors and reduces local inflammation, notes Dr. Stroumza. LEDs are also indicated. »

Appropriate dressings

“The first fifteen days, we apply Steri-Strips. These are small adhesives that protect the tissues against any infection,” says Dr. Stroumza.

Where are the scars placed?

For a discount or mammal augmentation : there are 3 types of scars
1 – sub-mammary (that of the underwire of the bra): it is between 2 and 4 cm;
2 – in the hollow of the armpit: it measures 3 to 4 cm.
3 – periareolar; that is to say that the scar is camouflaged in the periphery of the nipple. In case of breast lift, one is forced to make a scar around the nipple, and vertical, in navy ink.

In the case of a belly lift called abdominoplasty, the scar is hidden in the bikini

It is located between the pubis and the abdominal region. It resembles that of a caesarean section. It is sometimes a little longer laterally, if there is greater excess skin. If the patient has excess skin above the navel, it will also be necessary to make a small scar around the umbilicus, usually very discreet.

For a lower face lift, hide everything behind the ear

These scars are generally imperceptible, because they are located in the hair at the level of the temple, in the posterior furrow of the ear and in its natural reliefs, on its anterior part.

For eyelid lift or blepharoplasty, it is in the crease of the eyelid

These scars are easily resorbed and camouflaged at the level of the fold, so we do not see them. The scars of the lower eyelids are most often internal, that is, carried out on the mucous membrane on the deep surface of the eyelid, which makes them invisible.
