Contrary to popular belief, not all toothpastes are created equal. In its latest issue, 60 million consumers revealed the good and bad students. We take stock.

It’s a gesture that we repeat daily (at least, we hope!). According to official recommendations, you should brush your teeth two to three times a day. Present in every home, toothpaste is the first ally of oral hygiene. In its latest issue, 60 million consumers decided to investigate the quality of a dozen references available in supermarkets. Results ? Some products can be hazardous to health.

The good students

Among the twelve references singled out by the magazine, three brands managed to stand out. Organic Carrefour Soft toothpaste available for the modest sum of €2.05. With its very good quality / price ratio, this brand is at the top of the ranking thanks to a non-harmful formula and its Cosmos Organic certification (Ecocert). The special sensitive teeth of Eglydium (3,25€) obtains the second place, followed by the toothpaste for children Fluocaril Gel bi-fluorinated. Another thing to know: the exact amount of paste to put on your toothbrush. According to experts, a dose similar to “the size of a grain of corn for adults and a pea for children” would suffice. We notice !

The bad students

If half of the toothpastes present in the magazine’s selection contain titanium dioxide also called by the CI codes 77891 or E171 (“a controversial substance because it is suspected of promoting colorectal cancer”, specifies 60 million consumers), four references were found to be harmful to health. Top of the list? Diamond enamel charcoal which in the long term would cause tooth wear because of its too large quantity of charcoal, Sanogyl gum care with a vitamin complex which would be composed of many harmful substances, Sensodyne red sensitivity action and Pure breath signal which would contain titanium dioxide as well as sodium lauryl sulphate.
